A 'Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Joint Action in Achieving Carbon Neutrality in the Building Sector for National Carbon Neutrality' was signed between KIEL Institute (President Hyunhoon Cho) and the Korean Standards Association (KSA Chairman Myungsoo Kang) on May 2nd at the KSA conference room.
This MOU aims to foster mutual collaboration between the two institutions to work towards carbon neutrality in the building sector, contributing to the national goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector through the achievement of Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB).
The key areas of collaboration include ◎ Joint research for achieving carbon neutrality in the building sector and mutual cooperation ◎ Collaboration in regional branch and subunit infrastructure utilization to support ZEB certification regional activation ◎ Research on international standardization of ISO and IEC for achieving carbon neutrality ◎ Joint research and cooperative projects for establishing factory energy management systems (FEMS) and industrial energy infrastructure.
KIEL Institute, formerly known as the Korea Institute of Lighting and ICT, is the only specialized institute in the field of lighting responsible for the building energy sector. It has been actively engaged in a variety of tasks, including green energy research and development, product testing, certification, standardization, and workforce development, all aligned with the government's policies on carbon neutrality and demand efficiency enhancement.
Recently, the institute has strengthened its efforts in building energy savings through energy demand efficiency, certification of ZEB, green remodeling, and other initiatives aimed at achieving the national goal of carbon neutrality and responding to energy security.
Both institutions are currently playing a crucial role as KS certification bodies, participating in the 'Multi-Certification One-Stop Processing Support Center' initiated by the National Institute of Technology Standards to streamline industry certification support. They are diligently fulfilling their roles as public institutions.
Looking ahead, collaboration between the two institutions is anticipated to expand beyond ZEB certification regional activation infrastructure cooperation in the building sector, encompassing various initiatives aimed at achieving carbon neutrality.
President Hyunhoon Cho stated, "To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the importance of the ZEB certification system in the building sector and the exemplary role as a public institution in reducing carbon emissions in buildings are crucial. KIEL Institute will collaborate with the Korean Standards Association to take the lead in achieving carbon neutrality, creating a pleasant and healthy environment for the people.
